I stood up, my hand going to my bow. "I think something might have happened to him," I whispered, my eyes searching the forest. I turned back towards Brumby, saying quickly, "Get the camp ready for flight, okay? Get all of our things packed up in our bags and get ready to put our fire out. While you're at it, you might as well make a torch. I might be coming back quickly or in awhile. But when I get back, the camp needs to be ready to be picked up and left immediately." I paused. "I don't know if I'll be able to find Damien, but I'll certainly try."
Brumby grasped my hand. "Thank you," he whispered.
I nodded and head off into the forest.
The forest got darker as I went deeper into the foliage. My hand was on my bow at all times. I sometimes wondered as I moved silently through the trees if Damien was just doing this to spite me and his father.
If he was, then he was even more of a jerk then I'd ever cut him out to be and maybe he kind of deserved to be lost in the middle of the forest and to have me and his father go off without him.
But I had promised Brumby that I'd try to find Damien.
So I'd try to find Damien.
I didn't dare call for him. In my opinion, since he hadn't answered his own father's calls, then something really had happened to him and if I called out I might've been endangering him more.
I heard a twig snap behind me and felt my heart beating wildly. I calmed myself and climbed a nearby tree, watching the area carefully. It was only when I felt the cold fingers touch my neck did I whirl around....
